Major Attractions: No Consumption
Ohio's biggest tourist draws are all consumption-free zones. There are no exceptions:
- Cedar Point (Sandusky) — Private property with strict no-cannabis policy. Leave everything at your hotel or rental.
- Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland) — No consumption on the premises or surrounding public lakefront areas.
- Pro Football Hall of Fame (Canton) — No consumption at the museum, enshrinement ceremonies, or Hall of Fame Game.
- Ohio State Fairgrounds (Columbus) — Public event space, no cannabis consumption during events.
- Cuyahoga Valley National Park — Federal property. Cannabis is completely illegal on all National Park Service land regardless of Ohio state law. Possession on federal property is a federal misdemeanor.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is federal land where cannabis is illegal under federal law. This is not a state enforcement question — it is federal jurisdiction. Do not bring cannabis into the park. This applies to trailheads, campgrounds, scenic railroad areas, and all park property. Possession is a federal misdemeanor.
The Hotel Question
SB 56 restricts cannabis consumption to private residential or agricultural property. Hotels are not clearly "residential" under this language, which creates legal ambiguity. The practical realities:
- Smoking/vaping in hotel rooms: Legally risky under SB 56, and most hotels have no-smoking policies regardless.
- Edibles/tinctures in hotel rooms: No smoke, no smell, no detectable use. This is the practical workaround most visitors use.
- 420-friendly vacation rentals: The safest option. Airbnb and VRBO listings that explicitly permit cannabis use on private residential property satisfy SB 56's requirements.
Edibles & Tinctures: The Practical Choice
For visitors staying in hotels, edibles and tinctures solve the consumption problem. They produce no smoke, no smell, and no visible evidence of use. Ohio dispensaries stock a full range of edible products. If your lodging situation does not clearly permit smoking or vaping, edibles are the path of least resistance.
Remember Ohio's limits: 750 mg of THC in edibles per two-week period. Start with a low dose (5–10 mg) if you are not experienced with edibles. Effects take 30–90 minutes to onset and last significantly longer than inhaled cannabis.
Transporting Cannabis in Ohio
When driving with legally purchased cannabis in Ohio:
- Keep products in original dispensary packaging — sealed exit bags demonstrate legal purchase.
- Store in the trunk or a locked, non-passenger area of the vehicle.
- Do not open products in the vehicle — open cannabis containers in the passenger area create legal exposure.
- Never consume while driving or as a passenger — OVI applies to all vehicle occupants.
The OVI Reality: 2 ng/mL
Ohio's OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) THC threshold of 2 ng/mL in blood is among the strictest in the nation. For context: Colorado's limit is 5 ng/mL, and many states have no per se limit at all. At 2 ng/mL, you can test positive well after the impairing effects of cannabis have worn off. Regular users may test above 2 ng/mL even the next morning.
Use rideshare services after consuming. Do not assume you are safe to drive because you feel sober. The 2 ng/mL threshold is based on blood concentration, not subjective impairment, and THC metabolizes slowly. This is the single most important legal risk for cannabis visitors in Ohio.
Ohio has a drive-through dispensary — The Landing in Franklinton (Columbus). You can place an order and pick it up without leaving your car. Just remember: purchase through the drive-through, then go directly to your private residence or rental. Do not consume in the vehicle.
